After graduating from Durham University, where I read History, my career led me to Hampton Court Palace where I was invited by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) to investigate King Charles I’s escape from the palace in 1647, and my thesis duly published by HRP. I continued along these lines; creating learning resources for teachers and students to accompany exhibitions held at the Palace and the Tower of London; encouraging students to identify similarities and differences about the world in which they live – thus bringing history to life. Later, in my role as Senior Early Modern Record Specialist at The National Archives, I recognised the countless opportunities for learning from the plethora of government documents available within such a spectacular archive. I produced step-by-step interactive online tutorials to teach Latin and palaeography – with the intention of opening up a whole range of documents to those researchers for whom Latin had not, up until now, been available to them.
